Bordering Austria and the former Yugoslavia, this small region has been greatly influenced by its neighbours, and the cooking is rather like the melting pot of three cultures - Venetian, Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav. Everyday ingredients, such as pulses, polenta and soup, are typical of a somewhat impoverished region, but one exceptional local product is the excellent prosciutto di San Daniele.
