Tunbridge Wells gained fame as a Georgian Spa town famed for its healing ‘Chalybeate’ waters which contained high percentage of minerals including Iron and manganese. Visitors travelled to the town to take the waters whose powers could apparently ‘make the lean fat, the fat lean’ and to dry a moist brain!!
The town was granted the prefix ‘Royal’ in 1909, by King Edward VII who granted the town its official title to celebrate its popularity over the years amongst members of the royal family., and is one of only two towns in England to have been granted this.
More recently it featured in a Spitting Image sketch, where during a revolution, Tunbridge Wells declared its independence under the slogan of ‘ Liberty, Equality’ and Gardening’
