Coffee drinking in Italy is a serious business. Usually coffee means an espresso or short and is drunk throughout the day. Caffè latte is a breakfast drink and definitely not to be had after a meal. The quality of coffee beans and roasting is very high and only caster sugar is added so as not to darken the coffee. In Milan and the north, the coffee is liked smooth and silky and in the south they like the coffee to give more of a rich flavour.
