Affogato: The Quickest, Most Indulgent Dessert You Can Make

Italians Do Desserts A Little Differently...

There are times when the most luxurious experiences come from the simplest acts. In the realm of Italian desserts, nothing captures this truth quite like Affogato

Requiring just two main ingredients and less than five minutes of preparation, it is the ultimate post-dinner treat—a seamless marriage of hot and cold, bitter and sweet.

The Origins: A Dessert 'Drowned' in Tradition

To understand the Affogato, you only need to look to its name. Derived from the Italian verb affogare, it translates literally to "drowned."

While Italians have been combining coffee and ice cream for centuries, the modern Affogato as we know it gained widespread popularity in the mid-20th century, coinciding with the post-war boom of espresso machine culture in Italy. It sits in a unique culinary category: is it a beverage, or is it a dessert? In Italy, it is happily accepted as both.

The genius of the dish lies in the temperature contrast. When boiling hot espresso meets freezing cold vanilla gelato, it doesn't just melt the ice cream—it creates a thick, velvety foam where the fats emulsify with the coffee oils. The result is a creamy, bittersweet elixir that is entirely addictive.

The Soul of the Dish: Choosing Your Blend

Because there are so few components, the quality of your coffee is paramount. A weak or instant coffee simply will not do; you need a robust, aromatic espresso that can stand up to the sweetness of the vanilla.

At Carluccio’s, our signature coffee blends are roasted in Italy and inspired by the distinct coffee cultures of three great cities. Each brings a unique personality to your Affogato:

  • Milano: Our smoothest, most delicate blend. Primarily premium Arabica beans, it offers subtle fruity notes and a refined acidity. Choose Milano if you prefer a lighter, elegant dessert where the vanilla takes centre stage.

  • Roma: A beautifully balanced, smooth roast with a medium body. It strikes a classic middle ground, offering a rich aroma that complements the creaminess of the gelato without overpowering it.

  • Napoli: Intensely dark, full-bodied, and punchy. Inspired by the bold Neapolitan style, it features a higher proportion of Robusta beans for a thick crema and a lingering chocolatey finish. This is our personal favourite for an Affogato, providing a spectacular, dramatic contrast to the sweet ice cream.

The Recipe: Classic Italian Affogato

Ingredients (Per Person)

  • 1 large scoop of high-quality vanilla gelato or rich vanilla bean ice cream

  • 1 shot (approx. 30ml) of hot espresso, brewed using your choice of Carluccio’s Milano, Roma, or Napoli coffee

  • Optional: A splash of Amaretto or Frangelico liqueur for an adult twist

Method

1. Chill Your Glass

For the best results, place your serving glasses or small bowls into the freezer for 10–15 minutes before serving. This keeps the base of the gelato cold and slows down the melting process just enough to enjoy the contrast of textures.

2. Prepare the Coffee

Brew a fresh, piping-hot shot of espresso using your moka pot, espresso machine, or coffee press.

3. Scoop the Gelato

Take your chilled glass from the freezer and place one generous scoop of vanilla gelato right in the centre.

4. Drown and Serve

If you are adding liqueur, drizzle it over the gelato now. Finally, right at the table in front of your guests, pour the hot shot of espresso directly over the top of the vanilla scoop.

Watch as the dark coffee cascades down the sides, creating a beautiful marbled effect. Grab a spoon, dive in immediately, and enjoy the perfect balance of Italian craftsmanship.
