Bio Orto's Organic Olive Oil and the Houses of Trulli
Puglia’s Architectural Heritage Meets Exceptional Organic Olive Oil
In the sun-drenched landscapes of Puglia, Southern Italy, history is woven deeply into the soil and architecture. From the sweeping olive groves of Gargano to the iconic conical roofs of Alberobello, this region is celebrated for ancient traditions that survive to this day.
Bio Orto captures this dual heritage through its exceptional range of single-variety organic extra virgin olive oils. Packaged in signature glass bottles designed to mimic the sloped, whitewashed silhouette of Puglia’s ancient Trulli houses, these oils celebrate both local history and artisanal craftsmanship. Let Carluccio's take you on on a brief journey through Puglia...
The History of the Trulli Houses
The trullo (plural: trulli) is a traditional dry stone hut topped with a conical roof. First constructed in the 14th century in the Itria Valley, these remarkable structures were built entirely without mortar—a clever agricultural solution to avoid property taxes levied by the Kingdom of Naples. Local peasants constructed homes using loose limestone fieldstones, allowing them to disassemble their dwellings quickly whenever royal inspectors approached.
Over centuries, these temporary shelters grew into permanent rural communities. The whitewashed bases keep interiors cool against the blistering Mediterranean summer, while the conical roofs feature symbolic hand-painted whitewash designs to ward off bad luck. Today, they remain an enduring symbol of Pugliese ingenuity and rural heritage.
The Craftsmanship of Bio Orto Oils
Based at the foot of the Gargano National Park, Bio Orto is a family-run enterprise dedicated to organic farming. Their olives are harvested entirely by hand and cold-pressed within hours to preserve the natural polyphenols, vibrant colours, and distinct regional flavours of each olive cultivar.
Their custom bottles echo the geometric lines of the trulli roof, bringing a piece of Pugliese history directly to your kitchen.
