The Story Of Bocconcini di Fichi

Fruit & Chocolate Confectionery From Italy

Among the sun-drenched hills of southern Italy lies a confectionery tradition deeply tied to the natural rhythms of the land. Bocconcini di Fichi—literally "little fig mouthfuls"—are a delicate masterpiece of Calabrian confectionery. Combining sun-ripened, honeyed fruit with toasted nuts, fragrant spices, and velvety chocolate, these decadent bite-sized treats represent the true spirit of artisan Italian craftsmanship.

As the festive season approaches, Carluccio’s is delighted to share the remarkable heritage behind these traditional Calabrian sweets, alongside two exquisite varieties featured in our Christmas collection.

From the Hills of Cosenza: The Renowned "Dottato" Fig

The secret to authentic Bocconcini di Fichi begins in the rolling hills surrounding Cosenza, a province in Calabria famous for growing the finest figs in the Mediterranean.

Our producer personally selects these fruits from small, family-run farms scattered across the Cosenza countryside. The star of the harvest is the prized Dottato fig (often referred to as the "dotted" fig). Elongated and teardrop-shaped, this specific variety is celebrated by confectioners for its unusually small, soft seeds, leaving a interior that is exceptionally full, plump, and smooth on the palate. Their flavour profile is naturally rich and sweet, verging on pure wild honey.

Harvested as Mother Nature Dictates

Unlike commercial fruits harvested early for transport, Dottato figs are left to ripen fully on the plant. Thanks to the warm, forgiving Calabrese climate, the figs begin to naturally dehydrate directly on the stem while soaking up the late summer sun.

Harvesting takes place manually between August and October, strictly as Mother Nature dictates. Once gathered by hand, the figs are artfully dried using traditional, time-honoured processes handed down through generations of local families. This slow curing concentrates the natural sugars and creates a succulent texture that serves as the perfect canvas for rich coatings and indulgent fillings.

At Carluccio's This Christmas

This holiday season, we are bringing a taste of Calabrian luxury to your festive celebrations with two exceptional versions of this traditional sweet:

Bocconcini di Fichi con Mandorle

(Calabrian Figs Stuffed with Almond & Candied Orange Peel, Coated in White Chocolate)

A exquisite balance of fruit, nut, and citrus, these delights feature tender Cosenza Dottato figs stuffed with a crunchy toasted almond and fragrant candied orange peel. Each piece is then generously enrobed in a smooth, creamy shell of white chocolate. The contrast between the aromatic citrus, the warm nuttiness of the almond, and the sweetness of the white chocolate makes this a delicate masterpiece of Calabrese confectionery.

Bocconcini Di Fichi - Italian Confectionary

Bocconcini di Fichi con Crema al Caffè

(Calabrian Figs Stuffed with Coffee Cream, Coated in Dark or White Chocolate)

For those who adore the classic Italian pairing of rich espresso and chocolate, these Bocconcini offer an indulgent twist. Made with the same low-seed Cosenza fig, each piece is generously filled with a smooth, velvety cocoa and coffee cream fondant. To complete the creation, each piece is generously coated in an assortment of rich dark chocolate or creamy white chocolate.
